Pill bugs are a good source of nutrition, however, they can harbor lots of parasites such as the thorn-headed worm. Also, they need to be free from pesticides and herbicides. If you worm your beardie yearly, they are probably fine, otherwise I would avoid them.

AB, you have quite a bit of practical knowledge already. My only suggestion is that if the pet store is closing, they may be experiencing sufficient financial hardship that they have cut corners with their pet care. I would definitely advise a wellness exam, complete with stool sample, to make sure the animal is healthy, and that no medical measures are required to keep him in excellent shape. It may be well worth the added expense in the long run.

Yes, as AB mentioned at least 1/2 of the forum members on this site with pets of all kinds have new pets, some that they have wanted for a long time but couldn’t fit into an office-commuting lifestyle, and some whose own children and online students need something to do during lockdown, both for a learning experience and for entertainment. Good information for us to have, Nicole, that the toes can actually grow back with proper care. Toe loss in shedding is pretty common, unfortunately, but you are the first member to mention that they grow back. What amazing animals!

I really resonate with your daughter. Once, when walking to the grocery store as a little kid, I saw a dead cat in the road. Hit by a car. I was so distraught that all thoughts of the store were gone, and I ran home to announce to my parents that cars were cruel and we had to stop driving immediately. They managed to calm me, but I have never been wild about cars ever since. I have always driven slowly with an eye out for animals, even as a teen.

The good news for her is that highly empathetic people tend to do well in life and often attain advanced degrees (such as moi). My cousin loved all reptiles and eventually attained a Ph.D. in herpetology, so there you go.
