Looks very practical and sanitary. Are you getting into the breeding business full-time?

I’m glad he stopped doing that. Was it because you increased his feeding frequency?

Oh good for you mom! I have found that science and geography lessons based in the real world are retained better and more thoroughly comprehended by children than dry lessons from a book or even computer.

Sounds like a typical 8-year-olds report. It might be a fun exercise to get him to find Australia on a globe, and show him where beardies come from.

Hopefully they don’t all smoke cigars, slam whiskey and lose lots of money. Oh wait, that’s poker. D&D folks usually don’t go in for that, just some adult beverages and maybe a different kind of smoke. Sounds like they are a lot of work, but probably a lot of fun too, and at least you got a great pet with accommodations out of the deal. My kind of barter!

I was just curious because quite a few forum members over the years have posted pictures of their beardies climbing on or sleeping on dogs and even cats!

I am not a veterinarian, just saying. But if it was me I would suspect tuberculosis. A swab of the white area sent to the vet will be needed to be sure. If you feel you cannot do that, then treatment with Baytril should begin to make a noticeable difference within a few days. If it is not tuberculosis, which is very antibiotic-resistant so it’s better if it isn’t, it could be some sort of more common bacterial infection. If that is true, and there is no way to know without a swab, some owners have had good luck with Melafix, available where aquarium supplies are sold or online. Applying this to the area a couple of times a day should show results in 3-4 days. Expect lots of skin shedding.

In either case, or if it is chytrid, which is unlikely if you have no other newly purchased amphibians, you will need to thoroughly disinfect the entire habitat. The substrate should be replaced and the furniture and water bowls soaked in 10% bleach for half an hour and then rinsed twice with dechlorinated water. The tank itself will need the same treatment. This should prevent reinfection from bacteria hiding in cracks and crevices. Hopefully you have been able to catch this in time!

Mutual fake disdain. Does the beardie ever climb up on the dog to get attention?

Everyone I know, including comedian Paula Poundstone, are nuts about their beardies.

Your daughter must be made of some very heroic stuff. A concussion during covid! She must be a real trooper, and it’s so awesome that you have so many animals and animal-centered activities she can benefit from. Caring for horses, cows, pigs and goats helped my daughter (now an adult) learn responsibility and consistency, important for a young person with ADD.

You may already be very aware of this author, but if you have not read the book “Animals Make Us Human” by Temple
Grandin, you should try to check it out of the library or order it through Thriftbooks. Dr. Grandin is autistic herself, as well as being an expert in the livestock husbandry field. She really gets the benefits of animal-assisted therapy and recreation experiences on wellness for folks old and young with special needs.

Oh, and that is one massive zoo you have going on there. Are all of the full-sized equines saddle horses? How do you manage all of those critters? I have two house cats and a herd of goats and its all I can do to keep them all happy. Hoof trimming is sometimes the bane of my existence.

That’s awesome. I love to hear kids of any age caring for an animal well. it not only teaches responsibility, if fosters empathy and becomes a lasting emotional modality into adulthood. So important. Do you all have other pets?
