He sounds quite normal to me. This species is a stealth hunter, so don’t expect a great deal of activity from him/her. For now, you can feed him as much as he will eat in one sitting daily, but in two months start cutting back because they are prone to unhealthy levels of obesity. No more than every other day, and even less often from time to time, which will mimic a feast/famine eating sequence typical of wild life.

Fouling clean water is pretty typical, and you will just have to keep with the cleaning. You will know when he has pooped, believe me, unless he does it in his burrow. They are subject to constipation, so if you don’t see a poop in the next 24 hours, make sure that he has used his water dish regularly. Adding store-bought earthworms to his diet can help prevent constipation, as they are sort of slimy and help to lubricate the gut. So not catch any outside and feed it to him, they are full of parasites. As long as he is eating well there is no cause for alarm. If he stops eating, then search the habitat for signs of poo. If you don’t find any, place him in a warm bath with a tablespoon of honey dissolved in it. Most keepers find that this works wonders except in case of serious impaction, which is a much larger problem and would be the subject of a different post. For now, he sounds just fine.

Let us know how he is doing in a week or so, that way we can celebrate his good health or offer additional advice if needed.

Sadly, not at this time. I have two elderly house cats and once they are gone, I will be converting their ‘cat room’ to a reptile room with higher humidity and lots of plants in addition to enclosures for various crawlies.

What made you decide to get into chameleons? I am fascinated by their eyes.

Whooa…journalism will give you plenty of face to face contact, that’s for sure. You will be happy to get home and decompress with your chill and silent pet. Will you be a sophomore?

    Greetings,

19 is too cold, especially for a baby. Yes, do add an additional source of heat to the cool side to bring it up to about 25. Remember, these guys are indigenous to some parts of the planet with incredibly hot temperatures. I’m assuming you are in Canada. If that is the case you will need to consider a ceramic heat emitter for night time, also on a thermostat. If the temperature drops below 25 throughout the entire enclosure at night, his metabolism may begin to suffer. As an adult, he may go into brumation. Invest in a digital thermometer if you haven’t already, it will save you a great deal of aggravation if you live in a cold house. Also, be sure and have backup bulbs on hand. Although many of the good ceramic bulbs out there are super affordable and last 6 months or longer, they can go out unexpectedly. In a cold house you will need to be able to replace it immediately without a trip to the pet store or waiting to receive it online.

Where are you getting your baby boy from?

You got lucky, but you also knew what to look for in the way of signs of a healthy appearing animal. Many Petsmart patrons either don’t know what a sick animal looks like, or they see a sick animal, and decide to rescue it by paying full price for it. Which of course just encourages the company to maintain those business practices ๐Ÿ˜ฃ๐Ÿคจ

Jimmy is a lucky rascal to have you. How are the Leos doing?

I love your philosophy!! And although you have a plig situation with this family (making a Utah joke here, where I worked and taught college classes for quite some time) I think your sensitivity to captive bred vs. wild caught is admirable.

Tip on winning the monthly cricket contest…don’t depend on other forum members to see you across the finish line. Share stories and information with them, you betcha, but really, you are all in competition with each other. If you are determined to win, get your friends and family to log on and give you a critter gold. Do you belong to a reptile fancier’s society? Then get them involved. It seems to take around 35 to win. A lot, I know, but by gum, someone manages to pull it off every month for the last 3 months. Maybe on lockdown, they’re friendas had nothing better to do! Anyway, that is my advice, get your friends excited by your plans and get them to go online for skink-tacular breeding support, with plenty of crickets to make it work!

I noticed that, but what the heck, chicks dig scars!! Proof positive that we can all come back from a trauma, if the people around us give us support. Is he your only beardie?
