What a handsome rascal! Say, are you any relation to the famous landscape/paint horse artistBev Doolittle?

May I suggest a gecko? Parakeets can be tricky and subject to a number of respiratory problems.

Oh no!!! Oh Rosalina I am so sorry. You tried so very hard to make everything right for him. Do you think you will try with another frog?

Swallowing spikey substrate has gotta feel like swallowing a whole corn cob, instead of nibbling off the kernals. Glad he is feeling better, and it would indeed be wise to monitor him closely.

If the humidity is correct, I think he may be in pain. Reptiles and amphibians, along with many mammals, tend to close their eyes when they are extremely uncomfortable but not in immediate danger. Cannot address the matter of dots around the eyes without more information. A severe mite infestation might make him close his eyes to protect them, but there is also a possibility that it is something internal, like compaction. What has his diet been like recently? Is there any chance he may have eaten something rough and indigestible in terms of substrate?

Sounds like you have a good system. The only thing I could recommend at this point is age classes. Crickets who are all of the same age don’t tend toward cannibalism. Younger/older groupings together have problems with the oldsters eating the youngsters. Gross, I know, but that’s how nature rolls sometimes. Otherwise, I think your setup rocks and is producing the sort of feeder insects that will make your Firebolt totally crazed with happiness.

Not sure if the first comment was received. Looks like they have plenty of variety and moisture, but I can’t tell about protein. If they don’t have adequate protein, they may chow on each other, even if otherwise well fed. Soy granules or a cricket quencher gel with protein added should help that if needed.

He certainly does look well fed. I think you are right that he’s going to be a big boy. He is switching over to a more omnivorous diet right about the time that most people’s beardies do, when their growth rate slows down a bit. Why Bee Pollen Power?

Are fat-tailed geckos harder to come by than Leos? It sounds like they have to be shipped to you in many parts of the country. Is that true?
