Good for you! I think that is a smart policy. You probably came by that rule the hard way, and got back animals not in as good condition as when then left your care. Do you have an example of this you would care to share?

Well he is a cutey. The family was afraid of him! That is too bad, but what are you gonna do. I think he will make a good companion animal one day. Especially with those colors!

Puff does look like a magic dragon. I don’t think she is too old to be hand gentled, but it will certainly take more time, as I’m sure you know. What got you into the Beardie rescue business?

They seem very comfortable in each other’s company. The lizard is shedding, but apparently not cranky because of that. What are the species here? Are they usually such good friends?

    Happy New Year Willow!

I thought it was a sponge, but it is always good to ask. A sponge is a brilliant way to prevent water bowl related accidents. My daughter lost a very nice little peacock chick because she put water into a dixie cup with no sponge. He upended into the cup, upside down of course, and drowned. It was very sad, so I am glad you have measures in place to prevent such occurrences.

Five females all together, eh. Why so many? Are you guys thinking of breeding them?

    Greetings Bryan,

Before I weigh in on this question, I would love to know a few more facts about the equipment. What is the size of the tank itself? What is the age of the pad and the temp gun? What is the ambient temperature of your home right now?

I ask these things in order to eliminate the easiest of the variables that are relevant to the situation. Zoo Med UTH pads have been known to register temps as a little too cool, especially in a cold home, such as mine. But sometimes they are right-on, so let’s try to zero in on confounding elements in this situation.

Let’s look at the most likely culprits first, and then go from there. 88 – 90 is a desirable temp, with less not harming the animal, but possibly resulting in brumation.

Also, if your house is really warm, or there is a really warm spot, or the snake is comfortable hanging out inside the comfort of your clothes and next to your body for a while, then please relocate your friend for a little while and take the opportunity to remove the pad from underneath the tank and with the thermostat still set at 95, and in a place with no draught nor unusual supplemental heat, (like next to a forced-air vent or on floor or sidewall radiator), take the temp with the gun again, a couple of times. How does it read?

With all of this data in hand, I think we can trouble shoot this situation nicely.

That is so cute! What is her name? Do you have two females together or is the other gecko in the background a male?

This is very forward-thinking husbandry, and absolutely the way to prevent unnecessary injuries. There is an old saying…”the shepherd’s eye is the best medicine” so congratulations on being a good shepherd and preventing a problem before it starts. Your instincts about the best way to proceed are right-on, so keep feeding crickets only in the morning until some other enclosure configuration can be worked out.

Hey Stephanie, in order for Hanzo to enter the competition, we need to see a picture of him. If you tried and it didn’t load then please give it another try. Occasionally it takes 2 tries. If you still have trouble, just mention that in this thread and we will get it straightened out for you.
