They're loaded with fat and protein, which is ideal for a growing bearded dragon or leopard gecko. They're so popular that many owners try to breed them on their own. It's a novel journey, but breeding superworms is more complex than breeding crickets. And this is due to their metamorphosis. The actual superworm is in the larva stage. From the larva stage, they transform into a pupa. And from the pupa, they then transform into a beetle. Pretty amazing that the humble looking superworm has enough genetic fortitude to transform into an egg-laying beetle. In fact, we thought it was so incredible that we had to capture the process on video. So we set up a stationary camera, and put the video on a time lapse sensor. Beneath the video, we placed an older pupa into a deli cup. Pupa's look immobile, but they will perform micro-movements and can move off camera. We filmed for about 48 hours, and captured the pupa transform into a beetle. It was stunning display of mother nature, and we were excited to capture such a vivid transformation. I learned about Cuban Tree frogs in the past. Never saw any till I moved a tarp after it rained on day. Found this tiny little critter. Oh boy. She was so stinking cute. I knew what it was and could not do what they recommend. So she became a pet. She will be 2 in October. Now she has a friend. And I recently put them in a 40gallon tank. They don’t fight and have not eaten each other, as long as I keep them fed. I have seen another one in my yard, but I let her be. I hope we win some crickets for my critters. They are full of fat and protein, and very low in fiber. One downside is that they have a poor calcium to phosphorus ratio. This means you'll need to dust your superworms with calcium powder before offering them as a meal. But even, with such a poor calcium to phosphorus ratio, that might not be enough. So that's worth keeping in mind.Breeding superworms is more challenging than breeding crickets. So we created the superworm breeding tutorial video that demonstrates the steps required. But the quick summary is that superworms hatch from eggs, and will take about 4-5 months to grow into a 2" superworms. Once they reach this size, you'll want to cup them, and isolate them. You can see this demonstration in the video. But after you cup them, place them in a dark, warm area at about 80 degrees. And in about 2-3 weeks, they will transform into the pupa.
And then in about another 1-2 weeks, they will transform into a darkling beetle.
At this point, you should have plenty of newly morphed beetles. These beetles need to be placed into a breeding bin. The breeding bin will require ground oats, or our own bug food for bedding material. Add some egg crates, because the beetles will like to congregate in the nooks and crannies, a reproduce. But it's important to make sure you're offering the beetles a hydrating source of food. The beetles will get their hydration off that food. If they are not offered this hydrating food (lettuce, potatoes, carrots, etc), then they will eat the eggs or baby superworms. So it's critical that you check your breeding bins daily, to make sure you beetles are happy and nourished, or they will feast on the eggs. After about 2 weeks, you will relocate the beetles into a new breeding bin, with the exact same set up. And in about 1-2 weeks, you should have baby superworms hatching in the original bin.
