I've had him for over 12 years now, since he was the size of a half dollar. He's outlived many of my other animals and even the local pet store I bought him from! I wish I could say he was sweet, but he's not. Notoriously grumpy, he's mastered the art of lunging at me when I least expect it. I think he enjoys giving me a heart attack. Over the years, he's mellowed out and finally tolerates me holding him, but our friendship is mostly on a "look, don't touch" basis. Naturally, he enjoys crickets. Lots of them. With a year's supply, he might even smile :) I hope you've enjoyed meeting Gus as much as I've enjoyed keeping him! In their natural habitat, when the temps start to get low, there is less sunlight to warm up these exothermic animals. This also means there is less vegetation and insects to for them to prey on. This why they enter into a state of brumation. It helps them survive the colder temps, by reducing their metabolism, which also reduces their need to consume insects. So if your pet seems sluggish and non-responsive this time of year, they are beginning to brumate, and will be doing this until the temps in your area begin to warm up to their confort level. We have excellent guides on brumation for both bearded dragons and leopard geckos. And if you have any additional questions about brumation for other pets, our helpful forum members can chime in with feedback! [post_title] => Brumation!
