      Critter Contest!

Greetings! We are Galahad, Broomhilda, and Gertrudis! Our mom found us having a gecko party on our hammock last night (we were having a belated New Year’s celebration) and took this photo of us doing a little dance. We love our hammock but even more, love crickets! Please vote for us and we also have 4 other siblings and our parents (they live in the terrariums next to us) who love crickets too! Many thanks!

It’s the Crestie Squad, back in the action! Broomhilda is the big girl on the right?

So she’s younger than the others? Or is that just a trick of the camera?

She is 4 years old, and the others are 4-5 as well. She’s just a smaller lady! All are full adult size now.

That is so interesting. Different parentage?

No the same parents! Most of the offspring have very similar coloration, with a few exceptions (total of 7 babies :)). It may be a trick of the camera, they are all pretty much the same size.

That’s it then, a trick of the camera. Yes, you can win with less than 30, as AB points out. It varies from month to month.

Got it, thank you. πŸ™‚ Curious – do you see very little variation between offspring of similar parents? I was learning from a colleague who also has crested geckos that their genetic diversity is probably low anyway so they are all likely pretty closely related in the wild. I’m pretty sure this is an assumption. But I have one out of seven of the offspring here (same parents) who is this absolutely beautiful grayish color, also some spots. The parents are different color morphs so genetics pops up differently in the babies. These 3 that I posted here actually seem very similar to me in color and spots, but I often have a hard time telling anyone apart!

I understand that genetic diversity in the wild is bottlenecked. At one point they were believed to be extinct. But their popularity in the pet trade has changed all of that. Yes, like cheetahs, a limited gene pool can have implications for captive breeding, but they have been so popular long enough and with enough wild type introduction, that I think variations not associated with lethal genes are quite possible. I hope that answered your question.

Hi thanks, I wasn’t very clear in my question, sorry! What I was wondering is what you typically see in related crested offspring, since you seemed surprised there were differences in these siblings? It’s interesting to me since some of these guys are so similar I cannot tell them apart, and then I’ll have one or two that are completely different. Thanks!

You are very welcome. I try to get as many votes as i can for either people with multiple pets that eat insects or people really involved in the site.

That is very kind! It seems that a lot of people get their friends to vote so I don’t think I’ll ever win LOL ;p

I didnt think I would either. Most also post on social media, which i dont have. My brother and some of his friends voted for me. I won November. Some months you can win with like 10-15 votes so keep trying!

Where is that post at? I can’t seem to find it. I did see it the other day, and do know they were on this site daily because I’ve always seen them posting. I usually wait til the end of the month to vote.
