Caraline CorumParticipantWell obviously i don’t need the crickets for the hermit crab and definitley not for the kitten, so i will be using them to feed to my new bearded dragon. I am making a bioactive enclosure for him, so that’s already costing a pretty penny. With the free crickets, it will really help out. Anyone with a reptile will know that they go through food FAST.

ZoodulcisModeratorIs Hermie down with this inter-species cuddling?

Caraline CorumParticipantHe doesn’t mind. I wouldn’t put any extra stress on this old man!

Caraline CorumParticipantGus (Gunsmoke) when right back to sleep after he saw that it was Hermie. And even though they get along, I was monitoring the whole time. Hermie isn’t as active as he used to be, so I like to let him have some fun around the house.

ZoodulcisModeratorSo Hermie is an old crab? Reminds me of me 🤣 Seriously though, how old is he?

Caraline CorumParticipantHaha!!! Hermit crabs typically live from 5 to fifteen years in captivity. I have had him for about 3-4 years. He was already super big then, so i would guesstimate that he is about 8 years old (give or take a few years).

ABMoore22ParticipantThis reminds me of our Leopard gecko and our dog. He seeks out the dog to climb on. lol.
Hey I have some hermit crabs that are maybe half and inch, maybe a little more, smaller than him. Do you know of any places online to buy good shells for hermit crabs? Or any advice? So far, I havent had much luck getting accurate shell opening measurements from places I’ve found. Thanks!

Caraline CorumParticipantPreferably, I like to go to my local pet store to figure out accurate shell size, especially because Hermie is so big… his shell is about 3 inches. But if your hermit crabs are pretty small, it should be easier to find the right size online. I found these on amazon. It has multiple sizes (1/2″ – 2″) which give them a nice variety to find just the right shell. I Hope this will help you! https://www.amazon.com/Shells-Assorted-Changing-Seashells-Opening/dp/B083Y4XMRD/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=hermit+crab+shells+1%2F2+-1+inch&qid=1614874854&sr=8-8

Caraline CorumParticipantJust make sure you clean the shells before use. Also you need to make sure that you have a freshwater bowl and a saltwater bowl in their enclosure. The saltwater bowl will help them get rid of any mites that they may have and the freshwater bowl is for bathing/drinking water. You can get the soaking salt online or at a pet store. How many hermit crabs do you have?

ABMoore22ParticipantThanks so much. Yeah, i have everything in the enclosure. But mine are about 2inch shell openings and getting kinda hard to get accurate sizes. But that link should help, thank you!
