Keri OlsenParticipantThis is my son’s favorite picture of his bearded dragon, Scooby. He thinks Scooby looks like his dad (they might have a similar belly shape in this picture 😂).

ZoodulcisModeratorThat’s hilarious. He does have a tiny bit of a gut going on there. Lovely underbelly colors. Does Scooby come out to play everyday?

Keri OlsenParticipantYes my son works with him at least twice a day. Scooby has definitely settled down and is much calmer about being handled.

ZoodulcisModeratorTwice a day is great! Remind me, was he a rescue?

Keri OlsenParticipantWe had thought about rescuing one of the many ones you see online after owners have lost interest 🙁 but this was our first beardie and my son’s first reptile. I didn’t want to risk getting one in such poor health or mbd that we couldn’t turn it around.
We researched and found a great breeder just over an hour from us. She was wonderful in answering questions and gave me her cell phone number in case I had any questions about scooby once he was settled in. He was a bit squirmy until he settled in but it was a great opportunity for my son to learn patience and a calm approach. The breeder told us to handle no more than 5 min twice a day at first. I also had my son read to scooby (snuck in some academics lol). I help with all the handling but Scooby definitely responds to my son better than me.

ZoodulcisModeratorThat’s sound like a great approach. The breeder is right about handling, as it causes stress and releases stress hormones. If it were me, now that he is this old and really coming around, I would handle him once a day for 20 minutes 6 days a week. That way he gets his training and socialization in, but still has time to fully decompress in between sessions. Just food for thought.

Keri OlsenParticipantThank you for your advice, it makes sense to give him time between sessions.
