I understand that genetic diversity in the wild is bottlenecked. At one point they were believed to be extinct. But their popularity in the pet trade has changed all of that. Yes, like cheetahs, a limited gene pool can have implications for captive breeding, but they have been so popular long enough and with enough wild type introduction, that I think variations not associated with lethal genes are quite possible.
