Probably the most important thing is remembering to clean the lens before shooting. Even a finger smudge will keep a picture from looking as sharp as it should.

Good cameras are pricey for a reason but if you don’t need professional photos then you should be set. Make sure you have a big enough memory card. I have a 32Gb in my phone but I download the photos every few months. Might even consider a 64Gb or larger if you plan on taking a lot of pictures. Videos eat up a lot of memory as well. I use action cameras if I plan on doing videos longer than a minute.
